Cap at first almost spherical, later flattening and sometimes depressed. The surface is shiny, smooth, and may be slightly sticky in damp weather. Colour varies but is usually brown, often tinged with violet, purple, yellow, or green. The flesh is white, very firm, and retains a mild, nutty flavour. Gills thick and widely spaced, fragile, white when young, later turning bright yellow. They are free to slightly attached to the stem. Stem stout, cylindrical, white at first but staining yellow or russet with age. Flesh is firm, white, and does not change colour when cut. No ring present. Spore print yellow-ochre.
Microscopic Features: Spores subglobose to ellipsoid, measuring 7.5–10 × 7–9 μm, with low isolated warts sometimes connected by ridges forming a broken reticulum.
